I took a metals elective a few times when i was in college. It was fantastic. This project was a married metals piece with Brass and Copper. Inspired by Eastern designs the piece acts as an Incense burner. It actually looks kinda cool when the smoke rises through the cut holes
Glad you like the incense burner. It was inspired by turkish and middle eastern designs. Most of the ones i had seen were hanging incense burners , but i wanted to make one to sit on my desk. Both the top and the bottom are hammered out copper then i married the brass hindge to the top and the side. The cuttout designs on the top add a really nice effect when the smoke goes through it.
I see that your a fellow smither yourself. Do you have your own studio?
Yes, it was formally known as the separate garage ( so no not really) , but it has all my tools and everything I need to work. In Spain this summer i saw a lot of Moorish stuff from the 700 years Spain was in Muslim control they left tons! Of carvings and wonderful Arabic artwork in palaces, if you ever have time look up the Alhambra (here’s one site with a picture of the carvings [link]) good stuff, what’s the size of this piece? I have no clue from the photo. Fear and loathing is the best movie ever! I can hardly breath when he is trying to get of the marry go round it’s so funny!
Ah the garage. Thats were I keep all my glorious junk that i use for sculpture. I am a pack rat when it comes to collecting worthless items. What sort of Smithing equipement do you have? i am in the process of starting to invest in tools for my own studio, but I dont really know where to begin. So many tools i want and need, not sure what to prioritize. So how was Spain? why did you visit? I have never been there, i studied in Florence for 2 months in art history and metal Smithing so that kinda kicked me off into the metals field. I love the marry go round scene, but i would have to say my favorite part is when Johnny Depp gets the adrenochrom from Benicio Del Toro, and you have him all spun out in the foreground while Benecio is making a call to Lucy in the background and acting like he is being attacked. Plus that movies great because you can watch it over and over again, and see different things missed the first time, specially when it comes to subtle humor. Thanks for the informative link!
I know, I have a couple hundred dollars in brass bearings and old motors lying around I need to sell to the steel and iron company uptown $. I don’t have a very much equipment at all…im still slowly buying stuff so far just a anvil, oxyacetylene torch, millermatic mig welder ( I want to sell it and buy a tig) very expensive stuff ahh! School has so much stuff that is kind of ridiculous for me to buy casing equipment. I was in Spain with the family business buying land for condos...Johnny depp is so funny when he’s taking the adrenochrome! Yes that is a hilarious scene also!

I love the shape. It's very retro-future.
Islamic art is great. They're not allowed to draw the human form. So they go crazy with geometry and line. It's so fantastic to look at.
